Reinforced shock absorbers for Iveco Daily motorhomes

Many Iveco Daily drivers complain of a spongy ride combined with imprecise steering. The body roll and lateral tilt when cornering can be quite extreme. As a result, quite a few drivers feel they are ready to take their boatmaster’s certificate. Changing lanes often causes problems. Drivers feel they can only keep their vehicle in the lane with great difficulty.

Many Iveco Daily drivers complain about a harsh and jerky front suspension. Driving over transverse joints, e.g. on motorway bridges, causes the front axle to rattle and bang, and some drivers fear for the safety of their dashboard. This mainly affects fully integrated Iveco Dailys. However, the bouncing of the front axle caused by sensitivity to transverse joints is also a problem for driving safety.

Drivers of 4×4-based Iveco Dailys often feel as though their vehicle is about to tip over. In particular, the rear end of the 4×4 model tends to sag, which is not only unsightly but also means that the reduced approach angle means the vehicle is no longer 100% off-road capable. Some owners also complain of significant swaying of the vehicle when stationary. When the front torsion bar spring then loses its tension, the Dailys tend to sag there as well.

This suggests that the shock absorbers on your Iveco Daily are too weak or even faulty. Genuine shock absorbers from an Iveco Daily van are usually not up to the diverse demands of motorhomes, as they do not take into account the significantly different usage and the fact that motorhomes almost always operate at their weight limit. The standard chassis is often not designed to cope with this constant strain:

• A completely different vehicle height and width,
• a long rear overhang,
• additional tanks (moving load),
• a motorcycle bridge at the rear (shifted centre of gravity) or
• Load on the roof (raised centre of gravity).

Failing to adjust the dampers to these new requirements is negligent.

Air suspension is particularly useful when you need to raise the vehicle’s height or compensate for uneven ground at your parking spot. This is especially beneficial for vehicles with a long rear overhang (from the centre of the rear axle to the rear of the vehicle). For example, if you frequently use ferries or drive on steep ramps. An air spring can also be beneficial if the vehicle is sensitive to wind. However, an air suspension system only works vertically.

However, to improve driving safety, it is particularly important to take account of horizontal forces (lateral roll and sway, and all pitching and rocking movements). To significantly improve a vehicle’s handling, fast-acting shock absorbers are the first choice. As soon as the body moves out of its horizontal position, it must be held in place by a strong yet finely tuned rebound damping. The compression stage of our dampers allows for rapid compression without letting the cab ‘bottom out’

Some – particularly smaller – Iveco Daily models have a transverse leaf spring on the front axle. All other Iveco Daily models have a torsion bar spring on the front axle. Some of these also have an air suspension system. We can carry out adjustment work on the torsion bar suspension, calibrate the air suspension height and install an additional air spring at our premises.
